Commission a Portrait from Reference Photos

Portrait painting has been an esteemed art form for centuries, capturing the essence of individuals and preserving their likeness in a tangible form. As an experienced artist specializing in 3 distinct styles—classic/realistic, Figurative drawing, and impressionist—my commissioning process allows clients to choose a style that resonates with their aesthetic preferences, vision, and budget. This article will explore the intricacies of commissioning a portrait from reference photos while guiding you through the advantages of artistic styles.

The Art of Portraiture: Commission a Portrait from Reference Photos

Portrait painting is an intimate representation of a person, revealing not just their appearance but their character, emotions, and unique stories. Through the deft strokes of a brush, artists can immortalize a moment in time, creating a piece of art that can be cherished for generations. When customers consider commissioning a portrait, they often seek out high-quality reference photos to ensure accuracy and detail.

Choosing Reference Photos

The success of your portrait largely depends on the reference photos you provide. Here are some tips for choosing the best images:

  1. Quality: Ensure the images are high-resolution so that details are not lost in the painting process.

  2. Lighting: Good lighting is vital. Natural lighting tends to bring out the true colors and textures of the subject.

  3. Expressions: Select photos that capture a range of natural expressions. This can give me more insight into the subject's personality.

  4. Angles: Providing multiple angles can help create a more three-dimensional representation, which is especially useful in realistic portraits.

By carefully selecting your reference photos, you can significantly enhance the outcome of your commissioned portrait.

NOTE: I always recommend using good lighting. Please DON'T use any flash while taking your photographs! If you are not sure which pose(s) is suitable for your commission, I can guide you through the process by sending you photo samples.

I Offer Three Distinct Styles: Classic/Realistic, Figurative Drawing, and Impressionist

While these styles aim to capture the essence of the subject, they approach the process in distinct ways. Understanding these differences is crucial when deciding which style aligns best with your expectations.

Classic/Realistic Portraits

Classic or realistic portraits prioritize lifelike representation. This style focuses heavily on details such as skin textures, accurate facial features, and intricate backgrounds. Classic portraits demand a strong understanding of anatomy, lighting, and composition, resulting in stunningly detailed works that appear almost photographic.

Advantages of Classic/Realistic Portraits:

  • Timeless Appeal: This style never goes out of fashion, making it a perfect investment for families or individuals seeking to immortalize loved ones.

  • Highly Detailed: Realistic portraits showcase meticulous attention to detail, making them ideal for those wanting a true-to-life representation.

  • Versatility: Classic portraits can fit any décor style or setting, whether it's a grand hall or a cozy living room.

Figurative Drawing

Figurative drawing is less about exact likeness and more about the expression and form of the subject. This style allows flexibility in interpretation, focusing on the body's shapes and emotions.

Impressionist Portraits

Impressionist portraits embody a more expressive and loose technique, capturing the subject’s mood or essence rather than an exact likeness. This style emphasizes color, light, and brush strokes over precise detail.

Advantages of Impressionist Portraits:

  • Emotional Depth: By focusing on feeling rather than realism, impressionist portraits can evoke a strong emotional response and make a unique statement.

  • Dynamic and Vibrant: The use of bold colors and energetic brushwork gives impressionist portraits a lively and contemporary feel.

  • Personal Interpretation: Because this style allows for artistic interpretation, it presents a unique opportunity to reflect not just the subject but also the artist's vision.

The Commissioning Process

Commissioning a portrait is an exciting endeavor that begins with a consultation to discuss your vision and the style that best represents your intent. After agreeing on the details—including size, style, and timeline—you will provide the reference photos. I will then create an initial sketch for your approval before diving into the final painting.

Steps in the Commissioning Process:

  1. Consultation: Discuss your vision and select a style.

  2. Reference Photo Review: Evaluate which images work best for the project.

  3. Painting Process: The artist begins painting.

  4. Final Review: Once completed, you will receive the High-Resolution files for printing proposes and you can print your artwork on any material you like.
